Be alright

The last thing I needed was Trish. I apologize for letting our plans for this afternoon go awry, but what else was I supposed to do? I took some time for myself, aimlessly wandering around L.A., stopping for a drink at a friend’s bar before going back to pick up Ashlei. We maintained silence throughout the journey and even after reaching home.

“Rod?”

“Yes?” I respond, my eyes glued on my serving of Cantonese rice.

“You should eat.”

A smile tugs at the corner of my lips. The ever-concerned lifesaver is worried about my health. “Eating isn’t my priority right now.”

Ashlei sighs. “I’m so sorry, I swear I had no clue that…”

Her voice trails off, and I can fill in the blanks. I had figured it out the moment I saw her at Trish’s place. “It’s okay, sweetheart, don’t fret.” I shake my head, giving up my attempts to eat. “Trish has always excelled at creating chaos.”

I lean back in my chair, feeling the weight of a burden that’s too heavy to carry alone. I meet Ashlei’s eyes, noting the tension in her frame.

“She has always been a problem solver, helping countless women” she retorts, shaking her head.

“Including you.”

She nods, clutching her chopsticks tighter. “She returned to California for me, but it seemed peculiar that she chose to settle in Los Angeles instead of Malibu. I assumed she wanted to limit contact with her parents.”

I scoff. “I suppose they still haven’t forgiven her for getting involved with us.”

Ashlei squirms uncomfortably in her seat, avoiding my gaze. “I’m unsure about that.”

“Maybe it’s true.” She looks at me, puzzled. “Perhaps we’re the problem, bringing out her worst traits.” I rise from my seat and place my hands on the table. “Regardless, we can’t change the past, and both of you have put me in a shitty situation.”

Ashlei grows pale, maybe I was too sharp. I head to the fridge, grabbing another beer and guzzling half in one gulp.

“Are you going to tell Blaze?”

I pivot and lean against the door, watching her sit there unmoving, head lowered. Even her voice has changed, a blend of pain and resignation she’s trying to hide. Why? What did I say that was so wrong?

“Actually, it’s strange that he’s clueless, but it’s not your issue. I’m not angry with you, and maybe not even with her.” I shake my head. “I don’t know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop” I retort, closing the gap between us in a few strides. “What are you apologizing for?”

I seize her arm and yank her to her feet, locking eyes with her tear-filled ones.

“I’m not angry with you” I murmur, cradling her face. “I need to sort this out. I want Trish to stay safe and not get entangled in a mess she’s ignorant of, and the same goes for you.”

I trace her lips and she places her hands over mine.

She holds her breath momentarily. “If the past can’t be undone, are we doomed to atone for our mistakes forever? What’s the point in going on…”

Her voice falters, and a resounding noise fills my head.
